About The Font
Playfair Display is a serif typeface designed by Claus Eggers Sørensen and released in 2011. He is a type designer based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His design was heavily influenced by the Enlightenment of the late 18th century. Initially, there are three weights plus small caps, each with italics. The Playfair Display family is a transitional one when it comes to design. You can use it for everything from body text to display titles and short paragraphs of text.
The original font designer took John Baskerville’s designs and Scottish Roman designs into consideration in the font design. As a large display (transitional) design, it works well with Georgia for body text both functionally and in terms of style.
In November 2017, Playfair Display Font was updated to add additional full Latin language support and minor improvements. The Playfair Display SC small-caps font has only been added to the main family of small caps. Mark Simonson later updated it in 2018 for improved language support and small caps support on Mac OS X systems using Apple’s TrueType collection of fonts (TTC). The TTC version has all the ligatures before Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), but they don’t show up on Mac OS X systems before 10.7. Later in August 2019, the designer made the Playfair Display into a variable. This makes it a sibling of the original font, which was made into a variable font.
Playfair is part of Google’s font libraries. This project is open-source, and anyone can contribute.
