Font History
The story of the Mrs Eaves font starts way back in 1757 with a man named John Baskerville in Birmingham, England. He designed the original font and lovingly named it after his wife, Sarah Eaves.
Then, in 1996, a designer named Zuzana Licko gave the classic font a modern update.
Baskerville was always aiming for perfection, but his original style was a bit divisive; some people found it too sharp and hard to read. Zuzana softened the look, making the thick and thin strokes less dramatic so they print more cleanly. She’s also the one who gave it that special style with the small capital letters (or ‘small caps’).
Her redesign was a huge hit and won a top design award in 1999 for how great it looked in actual projects.
The font family has grown since then! There’s now an ‘XL’ version perfect for longer texts, and even a matching font called Mr. Eaves, which has a cleaner, more modern look.
Want to use it? There’s a free version for personal projects, but if you’re planning to use it for your business, you’ll need to buy a license.
The best part? You might already have it! It’s often included with Microsoft Word and is available in Adobe’s font library.

Mrs Eaves stands out due to its wide proportions, low x-height, and generous spacing. These features make it a favorite for print, especially in contexts where the text needs to command attention. Despite its popularity in print, Mrs Eaves hasn’t gained the same traction on the web. Here are some more uses:
- Designing: Mrs Eavas’ font is very popular with designers of various angles.
- Content: For the text and heading, Mrs Eavas is very useful for an attractive outlook.
- Documentation: The font has a look to use in documentation.
- Logos: You can design your logos with it.
