Cooper Black Font

The Cooper Black typeface is a display serif font with a heavyweight. It comes with two different styles. The popularity of this rounded serif typeface has been unbending for the last 100 years. This font is everywhere. It can be seen on candy wrappers, strip mall signs, or album covers. However, it’s adaptability and versatility to changing technology were relevant until the mid-20th century.

Its use in pop culture has increased worldwide since 1966. From Andy Warhol‘s pop art to the whole generation of the 60s and 70s.

Cooper Black has 2 styles and a family package option. Additionally, the units per EM are 2048. It also has 388 glyphs. However, this font has a scalable format and does not have a fixed width.

It was designed in 1922 by Oswald Cooper, an American type designer, as a metal typeface. The designer says that the Cooper Black typeface is “for far-sighted printers with near-sighted customers.” Cooper Black is a very heavy version of Cooper Oldstyle. It was first released by the Barnhart Brothers & Spindler foundry of Chicago in 1922.

At first, in 1919, it had rounded serifs and long ascenders. Although rounded typefaces first appeared in the 1830s, later, Cooper Black became the most popular weight in the Cooper family and became the dominant typeface of the 1920s. It resembles the old serif style. Additionally, due to the cultural adaptation of the font, it represents the retro 1970s.

An impressionistic design of the Copper Black font is called Cooper Hilite. ParaType and Wordshape have digitized it. Big foundries like Adobe and others have done many digitizations of Cooper Black. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, Cooper was available in many unusual versions.

URW has digitized Cooper Old Style. The influence of the Cooper Black font can be seen in Miles Newlyn’s New Kansas typeface. Moreover, Cooper’s black font has been re-issued by American Type Founders, Wordshape.
