Young Serif is Bastien Sozeau’s warm old-style serif, not a generic newspaper face. Rounded details soften its sturdy forms, which gives large titles a friendly editorial voice without turning ornamental.
What the reviewed file shows
The local specimen shows broad, bracketed serifs, low-to-moderate contrast and round bowls. The lowercase f curls into a compact terminal, the b has a generous rounded shoulder, and the capital Q finishes with a visible tail. Those character-level details support the upstream description: the design draws on old-style models while deliberately making b and f feel tender and generous.
Young Serif is strongest for magazine-style headings, pull quotes, packaging names and short introductions. Its regular weight can carry a paragraph at a comfortable size, but the broad shapes need enough line height. For dense body copy, compare it with a quieter text serif instead of assuming one display test proves long-form readability.

License and source record
Young Serif is licensed under SIL Open Font License 1.1. The upstream repository includes the OFL text and states that the font can be used, studied, modified and redistributed under that license, but the font software cannot be sold by itself. The license—not a short “free” label—is the authority for modification and redistribution.
The NoirBlancRouge repository identifies Young Serif as an old-style serif, documents its development history and links the source files, build process and OFL. This page describes only the reviewed local Regular TTF; newer upstream weights or italics are not implied to be in this download.
Practical preview checks
Test a headline containing b, f, Q and punctuation, then a four-line paragraph at the intended size. Watch the line spacing around descenders and compare title case with all caps; the face usually keeps more personality in mixed case.

Questions about Young Serif
Is Young Serif a variable family on this page?
No. The reviewed local download is one static Regular TTF. The upstream project has continued to expand, so do not infer that every current upstream style is bundled here.
Can Young Serif be used commercially?
Yes under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, provided any font-software redistribution or modification follows the license conditions.
What makes Young Serif distinctive?
Its old-style structure is softened by rounded details, especially in letters such as lowercase b and f.
