Font Specimen

Abel font specimen showing alphabet, numbers, and sample text

Details

Abel is Matthew Desmond / MADType’s narrow, flat-sided sans serif. Its mono-weight strokes and condensed proportions save horizontal space, while angled terminals keep a headline from looking like a purely mechanical condensed grotesk.

What the reviewed file shows

The local specimen shows tall, narrow capitals, a high x-height and almost uniform stroke width. The uppercase M and W remain compact, the lowercase a is double-storey, and the angled terminals on letters such as t add a small directional detail. Counters stay open at headline size, but a long all-caps line can become visually dense when tracking is too tight.

Abel works for navigation labels, compact editorial headings, poster lines and narrow cards. It can carry a short paragraph at a tested size, but the condensed rhythm is less relaxed than a wider reading face. Use moderate line length and add tracking for capitals rather than stretching the font horizontally.

  • One local TTF file: Abel-Regular.ttf.
  • Version 1.003 with 251 glyphs in the inspected local build.
  • Regular subfamily; OS/2 weight 400 and installable embedding bits.
  • Copyright 2011 Matthew Desmond; Reserved Font Name Abel; MADType foundry identity.

License and source record

Abel is licensed under SIL Open Font License 1.1 with the Reserved Font Name Abel. Google Fonts stores the family in its OFL collection and publishes the matching metadata and license. Commercial document and design use is permitted under the OFL; modification or redistribution of the font software must follow the license.

Google Fonts lists one normal 400 file named Abel-Regular.ttf and credits MADType, while the font copyright names Matthew Desmond. MADType’s own profile identifies the studio as Matthew Aaron Desmond’s typeface practice. The local file is the same family and version but has a different binary hash from the current Google build, so this page reports the inspected local 251-glyph build rather than claiming byte identity.

Practical preview checks

Test a navigation label, an all-caps heading and a three-line paragraph. Add tracking to capitals before reducing the font size. Compare I, l and 1 in functional labels, and avoid horizontal scaling because it distorts the deliberately narrow proportions.
