Font Specimen

Hussar Gothic font specimen showing alphabet, numbers, and sample text

Details

Hussar Gothic Oblique is an ultra-black display sans, not a traditional blackletter font. Robert Jablonski / Cannot Into Space Fonts used “Gothic” in the older American sans-serif sense and slanted this cut for a forceful poster rhythm.

What the reviewed file shows

The specimen shows very heavy strokes, rounded geometric counters and an oblique angle across both cases. The lowercase a is single-storey, the capital G has a compact opening, and the numerals occupy substantial width. Despite the weight, the terminals are softly shaped rather than spiked, so the voice is closer to an early poster sans than Fraktur or Old English lettering.

Use Hussar Gothic Oblique for one large headline, badge, game title or label that needs motion. It is not a body face, and the heavy counters can close under an outline or at small size. Give it generous tracking and pair it with a quiet upright sans serif for every explanatory line.

Verified local file facts

  • One local OTF file: Hussar-Gothic-Obl.otf.
  • Version 0.772 with 584 glyphs in the inspected file.
  • Oblique subfamily; the binary OS/2 weight is 900, correcting the earlier directory value of 400.
  • Copyright 2015 Robert Jablonski / Cannot Into Space Fonts.

License and source record

The OTF’s name table identifies the license as SIL Open Font License and links the OFL. The publisher listing also marks the family OFL. That permits broad project use under the license; modification and redistribution of the font software still need to comply with the OFL.

The publisher description says the face began as an ultra-black late-1800s/early-1900s-style “Gothic” sans serif. That context corrects the earlier page wording, which could be mistaken for blackletter. This approved local record contains only the Oblique file, not the upright Ultra style.

Practical preview checks

Test a short uppercase title and the same words in mixed case. Watch counters in e, a, 8 and 9. If they fill in, remove the outline or enlarge the type. Do not reduce tracking merely to force a long sentence onto one line.

Questions about Hussar Gothic

Is Hussar Gothic a blackletter font?

No. The publisher describes it as an ultra-black historical-style “Gothic” sans serif; here “Gothic” uses the older sans-serif meaning.

Why is the weight shown as 900?

The OTF’s OS/2 table reports weight class 900. The previous 400 value was a directory metadata error.

Does the download include the upright style?

No. This reviewed record contains Hussar-Gothic-Obl.otf, the Oblique cut only.
