Trade Gothic is a sans serif font family that was designed by Jackson Burke in 1948 for Linotype. It is one of the most popular fonts in the world, especially in advertising, journalism, and branding. Trade Gothic has a distinctive and versatile appearance, with a range of weights, widths, and styles. It is also compatible with many other fonts, making it a great choice for font pairing.
Trade Gothic font combines the simplicity and clarity of a grotesque typeface with humanist touches. It has a large x-height, narrow proportions, and tight letter spacing. It also has some quirky features, such as the angled terminals of the lowercase a and t, the curved tail of the uppercase Q, and the irregular stroke contrast.
Trade Gothic has 14 styles, including regular, bold, condensed, extended, and oblique versions. The font supports Basic Latin, Latin Extended-A, Spacing Modifier Letters, General Punctuations and more. Trade Gothic has over 200 glyphs per style, including ligatures, alternates, fractions, and symbols. The Adobe font family also provided this font for free to Creative Cloud customers.
Trade Gothic Font is suitable for industries such as media, finance, technology, sports, fashion, and entertainment. An American skateboard market called Zoo York uses the Trade Gothic Pro Bold Condensed #20 font for their logo.

With the debut of Trade Gothic Next, Trade Gothic underwent a modernization. This redesign was conceptualized by Akira Kobayashi and Tom Grace and released by Linotype in February 2009. Their main objective was to fix the problems the original family had with consistency. Reworked designs as a result, with improved spacing, kerning, and terminals and stroke endings. With four weights and three widths, the family now has 17 fonts.
Building on the popularity of Trade Gothic Next, Trade Gothic Next Rounded was released in 2009 as a rounded, softened version of the original. This variation maintains Trade Gothic’s essential characteristics while presenting a softer aesthetic, making it appropriate for a wider range of applications.
Trade Gothic Display was established in 2017. This variant was created by Lynne Yun of Monotype GmbH and is based on Trade Gothic Condensed Heavy. However, only capital glyphs are used in its design for Latin texts. The family consists of five fonts, each with a single weight and width but five different glyph outline styles. Layering is possible with this design, resulting in intricate and complex visual effects.
