Dr Sugiyama Font

Today we want to introduce you to the Dr Sugiyama Font! The Charles Bluemlein Script Collection is a fascinating reminder of those heady times of hand lettering and calligraphy from the USA. In the early 1930s during World War II, there were approximately 200 professional hand letterers operating in NYC alone. The strange way in which the Bluemlein scripts were constructed and generated – by amassing different signatures and then constructing whole alphabets from them is an intriguing calligraphic experience. Since the set of assembled designs seemed nothing like the first signatures, fictitious names were delegated to the script typefaces. The typeface designs were then piled in Higgins Ink catalogs.

Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos deliver the Bluemlein scripts back to life in some enlarged digital variations, reflecting the requirements of the designer. They designed Dr Sugiyama Font. Extreme care was taken to leave the scripts, maintaining the bogus names initially assigned to them by Bluemlein.
