Muscle Font

Muscle font is a bold, Display typeface designed by Neil Summerour and published through Positype. Neil Summerour is a type designer based in Georgia, USA, with one foot in Takamatsu, Japan. He is the founder of the Positype foundry and Swash & Kern lettering studio. Muscle was initially released in 2009 and updated in 2018, and it is available in four styles through Positype.

Muscle started as extra sketches from Neil Summerour’s “Sneakers” font. He made them thicker and slimmer, and in 2009, they became Muscle. Summerour is a letter-drawer from Georgia who runs the small Positype foundry. He kept Muscle bold yet friendly, like all his fonts.

Neil thinks the human body is beautiful and strong, so he made Muscle look like it: thick, curvy, and full of energy, great for big, bold words that pop.

The Muscle font was used for the main logo of the LALA Open Air Festival in Perth, Australia, launched in 2023. Studio Thinktank built the entire inaugural identity around its bold, narrow letterforms so the first-year festival could grab attention in a crowded market without any past photos or footage.
