Purpose

Previous digital versions of Futura suffered from a “photocopy-of-a-photocopy” quality loss, with inconsistent spacing, limited weight ranges, and mathematically-slanted italics (obliques) that distorted the original geometric rhythm. Futura Now was created to restore the warmth, clarity, and rationality of Renner’s original metal type drawings while meeting 21st-century digital demands.

Design Corrections

Fixed inconsistent spacing that plagued earlier digital versions
True italics instead of slanted romans, preserving geometric rhythm
Contemporary weight distribution where Ultra Bold is properly inky and Thin is genuinely delicate
Restored original character shapes based on historical research of Bauer Type Foundry specimens

Design Team

Led by Steve Matteson (Monotype’s Creative Type Director) with Juan Villanueva and Terrance Weinzierl, the team spent years researching historical specimens to excavate authentic forms while removing artifacts from previous digitizations.
