Beleren font

The Beleren font is often associated with the “Magic: The Gathering” trading card game.

This font is used in the card text and is recognized for its distinctive style, which complements the fantasy theme of the game.

Designed by Delve Withrington of Delve Fonts in late 2012 and officially introduced in July 2014, the Belerena font was used in 2015 to replace the previous typeface, the Matrix Bold font, and unify the brand’s visual identity. The font first appeared in Duels of the Planeswalkers, and it now appears on all cards, packaging, apps, and marketing materials.

They called the font “Beleren” after Jace, the famous blue Planeswalker, so the letters feel like part of the Magic story.

Wizards never sell the font, yet a free copy is everywhere.
In 2014, they posted a rulebook that still had the letters hidden inside; fans copied the bold style and uploaded it to GitHub and Reddit.

First Magic cards (1993-2003) used a thin, old-style font called Goudy Medieval. Next (2003-2014), they picked thick, square letters named the Matrix Bold font. Since 2015, the cards have used the Beleren font, a new set of letters made just for Magic.
