J. Robert Oppenheimer was born on April 22, 1904, in New York City. He was a prodigy who excelled in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and languages. He graduated from Harvard University in 1925 with a chemistry degree. He then traveled to Europe to study physics under some of the most renowned scientists of his time. These scientists included Max Born, Niels Bohr, Paul Dirac, and Werner Heisenberg.

In 1929, he returned to the United States and became a physics professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He made significant contributions to quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, cosmology, and astrophysics.

In 1942, he was appointed director of the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico. He led the Manhattan Project’s atomic bomb development. He oversaw the design and testing of the first nuclear weapons: Trinity (the first detonation), Little Boy (dropped on Hiroshima), and Fat Man (dropped on Nagasaki).

After World War II ended in 1945, he became a vocal advocate for international control of nuclear weapons and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He also became involved in science politics and ethics and was a member of several advisory committees and commissions. However, in 1954, he was accused of being a communist sympathizer and a security risk. His security clearance was revoked after a controversial hearing. He was reinstated in 1963, but his influence and reputation diminished. He died of throat cancer on February 18, 1967, in Princeton, New Jersey.
